What is a RE-KEY?

Re-Key your Home or Business?

Re-keying may be a service you are not familiar with. Let me explain. Some people may call a RE-KEY, "changing locks" or "getting new keys". Essentially what re-keying means, is that the cylinder or INSIDE PART of the lock is taken out of the knob or handle on your door, and the pins that determine which key will open your lock... are changed. Your old key should not work anymore, and a new key will work. I love the convenience of having all the doors into my home on the SAME KEY. A professional locksmith will be able to KEY or RE-KEY all your doors to the same key, unless the locks are not compatible with each other, in which case, you may have 1 or more locks replaced to match the type of lock so that all your doors may use the same key. Back door, side door, front door, outside door into garage, ect... JUST 1 KEY!

When to consider a RE-KEY?

You may want to think about having a RE-KEY when:

1- You just bought a new house or business. Previous owners, renters, real estate professionals or contractors may have a key into your property. Keep yourself, family, employees and property secure- RE-KEY!

2- You had a break-in or security issue. Don't think that it won't happen again. In fact, just a simple Re-key could prevent future break-ins and having a professional locksmith check your locks and doors and educate you on other effective ways to deter burglars could save you from another loss.

3- Your locks are old and not working properly. If your doors rub when they open or close, or the latch from the lock doesn't fully engage in the doorjam, or your key is extremely hard to turn- these are all reasons to have a professional come service your locks. This may or may not include a RE-KEY, but functioning locks are vital to usefulness and safety.

4-You fired someone. This is obvious... you want to RE-KEY, so a fired employee does not have access to your property any longer.

5- You go through Divorce or break-up. You RE-KEY after or during a domestic matter with an ex, or family member, in which case sometimes law enforcement has to get involved to make sure a Locksmith can legally change the locks for the person with legal ownership of the property.

I think that when you move into a new home, that you should get the locks re-keyed. You never know if the previous owners would want to snoop around still. Anyways, before you go taking your door apart, I would suggest that you get the help of a professional locksmith. Not many people know how to dismantle and reassemble a lock on their own. http://www.rivercitylocksmiths.com.au/commercial

I think the break-up is the most common reason I've seen for someone to re-key their house. It might not be necessary, but it usually makes them feel safer. And in several instances, it's ended up helping them in the future when they went to move out and the new renter didn't have to worry. http://www.arlocksmithnj.com

This is a really smart service to keep in mind. I've had a falling out with roommates before and wished I could change the locks after they left. I didn't bother since I wasn't going to be at the apartment much longer though. If something like that should happen again I'll be sure to change my locks for my safety.

I had no idea that locksmiths could make a change like that. I would definitely want to be able to have one key to all of my doors just like you said. It's not that fun to have to carry a bunch of different keys, so people should find ways to change that. I think this will be something that helps everyone out a lot, and hopefully people will have a more convenient experience in the future.

Re-keying the locks around my home actually sounds like exactly what I need right now! An old friend of mine had a key to my place so she could stop by whenever she needed to, but she recently lost that key. I hate the thought that some random person could get into my home with that key. How much would I be looking at paying a locksmith to re-key my locks to fix the situation?

You're absolutely right about possibly needing to re-key. If the previous tenants or owners have access to your property, then you've set yourself up for potentially dangerous situations. Hopefully people will be able to understand this kind of thing and do anything in their power to protect themselves. I know that I would want to be safe no matter what.

Thanks for explaining when I would want to re-key my home. I've recently moved into a new house, so I was considering if changing my locks would be a good idea. It seems like having all of the doors to my house open to the same key would be really convenient. The locks on the doors in my previous home needed different keys, so I had to carry around a few keys around with me. Being able to carry only one key around with me would be much more convenient, so I'll consider having my new home re-keyed.
